Determination of K 270 in Vegetable Oils

  • Determination of K 270 in Vegetable Oils

OxiTester helps solving the problem of detecting any refined oil addition to virgin olive oil via the reading of K270 indicator without requiring the use of complex and costly instrumentation

The spectrophotometric reading of K270 values is a valid method to detect the presence of refined oil that may have been added to virgin olive oil.

UV ray absorbance values of refined oils and, particularly, in the 270 nm region are in fact significantly higher than those of virgin and extra virgin olive oils. Conjugated triens specifically show absorbance peaks at this specific wavelength.

This test also provides information on the quality of olive oil and on its degree of oxidation. The formation of ketone groups during the most advanced oxidation stages increases absorption at 270 nm.

UV spectrophotometry enables to:

  • Determine if an olive oil is virgin and classify it commercially
  • Identify olive oils obtained through refinement processes (pomace and seed oil)
  • Identify mixtures containing virgin olive oil and any other type of refined oil
  • In traditional methods, the spectrophotometric tests are carried out on oil dissolved in an appropriate solvent (cyclohexane and iso-octane) and using quartz cuvette.

Features and benefits of OxiTester method:

  • Does not require complex and expensive instrumentation, such as a spectrophotometer or quartz vials
  • Unlike the official method, it does not use toxic solvents
  • Does not require sample preparation as opposed to official methods

Test method

End point test.
Color reading at 270 nm.
Test time: immediate
It is possible to perform several test sessions with a maximum of 14 samples.

Test principle

Absorbance values are correlated and expressed as specific extinction E 1% 1cm (extinction of an 11% solution of the fatty substance in the prescribed solvent with a thickness of 1 cm), which is generally indicated as K (extinction coefficient).

Sample

Oil: collect as is (olive oil, seed oil, nut oil, etc).
